LEAD Brevard has announced the twelve finalists for its seventh annual 4 Under 40 – Celebrating the Next Generation of Leaders recognition gala, to be held on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 6:00 pm, at the Bernard Simpkins Fine Arts Auditorium on the Campus of Brevard Community College, Cocoa. The event showcases the many young adults who are working to make a positive impact in Brevard County through their leadership and commitment to community service.

Finalists for the recognition of 4 Under 40 are: Rick Balda, President – Balda Development & Construction; Carey Beam, Communications Specialist – Craig Technologies; Julie Braga, Area Director of Sales – Courtyard & Residence Inn by Marriott Melbourne; Angelica Cotshott, CEO – Kindred Hospital; Aliona Groh, Marketing Coordinator – Hoyman Dobson; Mark Malek, Managing Partner– Zies Widerman & Malek; Richard Rogers Area Director, Central Florida – Eckerd Youth Alternatives; Dr. Anita Saluja, Dermatologist – MIMA; Joseph Sofia, Vice President – Florida Business Bank; Rebecca Wood, Associate Editor, SCB Marketing; Holly Woolsey, Senior Philanthropy Officer– Jess Parrish Medical Foundation; and Catherine Wright, Business Development Manager – Harris Corporation.

From over 40 nominations, finalists were chosen by a group of independent community leaders who individually made their selections based purely on the information provided within the nominations. The final four recipients will be decided upon by a panel of three community leaders; Roger Dobson, Debbie Harvey, and Robert Jordan. Criteria for the selection of finalists was based on the nominees possessing the following leadership characteristics: exceptional communication skills; originality of approaches to strengthening and transforming the community; knowledge and understanding of how the community works; social entrepreneurship; tangible improvement in the lives of others; measurably strengthening the quality and health of community institutions; and a sustainable impact on the community at large.

In addition to the 4 under 40 Recognition Awards. LEAD Brevard will continue a new tradition of recognizing one individual in the community who has worked to encourage and advance Young Professionals through the Rodney S. Ketcham Leadership Award. This year’s award will go to Marilyn J. “Bunny” Finney.

Presenting sponsors of the event include FLORIDA TODAY, Harris Corporation, Parrish Medical Center, and a consortium of higher education institutions including Brevard Community College, Florida Institute of Technology, and the University of Central Florida. Symetrics Industries is also supporting the event.

Individual seating for the gala and awards presentation is $49.00 per person. Reservations and pre-payment are required by Monday, February 14th. FPRA Members Linda Herridge. Abacus Technology and Lisa Malone, NASA, Kennedy Space Center

FPRA member Linda Herridge recieved the NASA Certificate of Appreciation on Dec. 7, 2010 at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Complex.  The award was  given “for exceptional dedication and writing support of NASA missions, projects, and research and development and KSC operations.” 

Herridge has worked at Kennedy Space Center for nearly 10 years and was nominated for the award by Lisa Malone, APR, CPRC,  Director of Public Affairs at KSC.  Herridge is currently serving as the State FPRA Executive Committee and as the V.P. Research & Planning.

Cyndi Hernandez, public relations coordinator for Brevard Family Partnership, the county’s lead child welfare agency, received the Support Staff of the Year Award from the Florida Coalition for Children at its annual conference, held recently in Jacksonville. Hernandez was the first statewide recipient of the new award. The Coalition presented the honor, recognizing her as a “team player who, though she may not have direct contact with the children served, without her contribution the agency’s mission and vision could not be fulfilled.”

“It’s an honor to work with someone who’s as committed to our agency and the children and families we serve,” said Geo Ropert, BFP’s director of communications. “Cyndi’s tireless efforts to promote our mission have raised the community’s awareness of Brevard Family Partnership and the important role we and our community partners play in protecting children and strengthening families.”

With BFP since 2007, Hernandez is responsible for management of the agency’s many special events, coordinating its media campaigns, and executing marketing strategies with staff and agency partners to promote the mission, vision, and goals of the organization. Additionally, Hernandez is secretary of the Brevard Child Abuse Prevention Task Force, as well as secretary of the Space Coast Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association. She also is a member of the Community Impact Volunteer program at United Way of Brevard, the Parenting Workshop committee through Brevard Public Schools, the Florida Coalition for Children’s Communications Council, and Title I District Advisory Committee.

The National Space Club Florida Committee presents the Harry Kolcum Memorial News & Communication Award honoring FPRA Member Tracy Yates, Communications and Public Relations Manager for United Space Alliance on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Radisson Resort at the Port – Convention Center.

The National Space NSCFL Florida Committee each year recognizes area representatives of the news media and communications professions for excellence in their ability to communicate the space story along Florida’s Space Coast and throughout the world.

The award is named in honor of Harry Kolcum, the former managing editor of Aviation Week & Space Technology, who was Cape bureau chief from 1980 to 1993 prior to his death in 1994. Kolcum was a founding member of the National Space NSCFL Florida Committee.

Joined by three other young professionals, these Public Relations pros from the Space Coast will represent Brevard County during their overseas adventure and hope to learn more about PR methodology as practiced in Korea.

The five members of the outbound Group Study Exchange team, from Rotary District 6930 are embarking on a month-long vocational and cultural exchange with Rotarians in District 3690 that encompasses outlying areas of Seoul in northern Gyeonggi Province.  The team from Florida is developing a multimedia presentation to describe the best industrial and cultural features of the East Central and South Florida region.   The team returns home on April 19.

Denny is Past-President of the Titusville Sunrise Rotary Club and is GSE Team Leader.  Carey Beam is the communications specialist with Craig Technologies in Cape Canaveral, and is the VP of Communications for the FPRA Space Coast Chapter board.  The other team members are Krista McGowan, owner of Orcom Labs in Indian Harbor Beach, Ryan McGill, an engineer with Harris Corp. in Melbourne, and Ana Petkovic, a pharmacist manager with CVS in Boynton Beach.

Since being brought together in October of last year, the team has spent many hours researching Korean culture and principals of Rotary International, met for a series of preparatory meetings, received coaching from native Korean speakers, attended Rotary club meetings and service projects, planned for international travel, practiced conversational Korean phrases, and shared authentic Korean meals with their families at locations throughout the District.  The Group Study Exchange program is made possible by funding from the Rotary Foundation.

The Canaveral Port Authority has announced the promotion of Rosalind Harvey to senior director of communications and community affairs.  “Rosalind’s leadership, determination, and professionalism have been instrumental in helping our organization to progress to the next level in the community and in the maritime industry,” says J. Stanley “Stan” Payne, chief executive officer of Port Canaveral. “She brings innovation and passion in all her efforts to enhance and advance Port Canaveral.”
Harvey joined the Canaveral Port Authority 10 years ago as an assistant director of public relations. In 2004, she was promoted to director of communications. In her new expanded position, she becomes a part of the senior committee.  Harvey is a former print and broadcast journalist with a master’s degree from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in communications from North Carolina A&T State University. She serves on the Public Relations Committee of the American Association of Port Authorities and is a past president of the Space Coast Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association.
