Cheers to Mike Rein and Lisa Rice at the 2010 Roast and Toast

The 2010 Roast & Toast was held at the Melbourne Hilton Rialto tonight to honor Mike Rein of the United Launch Alliance as the PR Professional of the Year. Our Roastee, Brevard Workforce President Lisa Rice was on hand to take some ribbing (and get her own cudos for her contributions to our community). More than a hundred were in attendance as we said thanks to the outgoing board, installed the incoming board, and awarded three of our members the annual Chapter Awards. Julie Arnold received the Rising Star Award, Tina Lange, APR, took home the Member of the Year, and Amelia Woodbridge received the Doris Fleishman Award. See pictures from the event on Flickr.

PR Representative Position at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

A position is open for a public relations representative at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The position is responsible for fulfilling day-to-day needs of the public relations department including writing and editing feature stories, news releases, media advisories, web content, promotional copy and ad copy. You will also research and develop targeted media lists using online media directories, coordinate media interviews, comp media tickets, familiarize tours for media, media events, film crews and new media kits. The job includes tabulating print, broadcast, blog and Internet coverage, assisting with social media updates, supervising the fulfillment of requests for charity ticket donations, special charity events and scholarship requests as well as monitoring space and tourism news stories.

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications or other related field and a minimum of one year related experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Must be proficient with standard office equipment and Microsoft Office.

Communications Manager Sought

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF), a nonprofit organization, is seeking a dynamic person to step into the role of Communications Manager. This person will manage and implement all aspects of ASF’s internal and external communications for its programs and the organization in general. Candidates must have strong marketing and management skills, as they will be leading a team of two strong support members. The Foundation has several unique fundraising programs throughout the year and the Communications Manager will be responsible for conceptualizing, drafting and executing marketing plans on each.

Candidates should be excellent writers and editors, given that they will be drafting and overseeing press releases, e-campaigns, correspondences, website copy, quarterly newsletters, an annual magazine and scripts. In addition, candidates should be comfortable with public speaking, as they will interface with media, donors, astronauts, college representatives and Scholar Alumni. Responsibilities will also include managing and implementing advertising initiatives such as direct mailers, event programs, brochures, magazines, print/radio ads, internet buttons, website content and video production. As well as, managing social marketing and promotions.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications/PR or a related field
At least two years experience in related field
Excellent writing and editing skills
Strong management skills
Proficient in Microsoft and Adobe
Able to take initiative and complete tasks on own
Basic Space History knowledge a plus
Able to work nights, weekends and travel when require

FPRA Space Coast Media Roundtable a Success!

On June 16, the Space Coast Chapter of FPRA held the Media Roundtable at the Holiday Inn Melbourne – Viera Conference Center. Representatives from local and national media outlets discussed the best practices for submitting press releases and pitching potential news stories, as well as how technology is affecting the dissemination and distribution of news in the digital age.

The event was open to the public and more than 100 people attended the event and met correspondents from the Associated Press, Brevard Business News, Space Coast Media Group (Space Coast Living, Space Coast Living Health), FL TODAY, The Orlando Sentinel, Reuters, Florida Trend, and Orlando Business Journal. All proceeds from the event will benefit Rolling Readers Space Coast, an organization that serves serve economically disadvantaged children in Brevard County and brings the joy of reading and love of quality literature to thousands of local children.

Grant Heston, Assistant Vice President for News & Information
University of Central Florida

Grant Heston is the University of Central Florida’ assistant vice president for News and Information, appointed in 2007.

With more than a decade of experience in corporate communications and print and online writing and editing, Heston managed communications to media, more than 200,000 customers and 1,000 employees during his work for the Orlando Utilities Commission. He previously worked as a senior online news producer and reporter at the Orlando Sentinel and as an editor at CBS Sports.com.

Heston received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida. He serves on the boards of directors for the Friends of the Orange County Library System and the Lake Formosa Neighborhood Association, and he is a graduate of the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Orlando program.

News and Information is UCF’s primary communications office. The department is responsible for disseminating news about the university’s academic programs, research, administration and other activities to the media and the public. For more information, visit www.news.ucf.edu.
